People are typically divided into two separate categories when it comes to how they handle their money: savers and spenders. While these types of people ultimately take vastly different approaches to their spending habits, I think they can agree on one thing: they want to get as much use as possible out of the things they buy. And for a lot of people, that use is particularly important in regards to clothing.
I like buying clothes as much as the next person, but I’m more of a saver than a spender. One of the reasons I tend to save my clothing money rather than spend it is because I believe fashion isn’t just about buying cute things; it’s about finding creative ways to style what you own. That being said, today I thought I would offer a handful of tips that I use in order to make the most out of my wardrobe. These tips have helped me make the most out of my clothes, and I hope they are able to do the same for you.
CLEAN IT OUT FREQUENTLY.
I have to confess that historically I haven’t been the best at this, but I do notice a HUGE difference in my ability to fully utilize everything in my closet when it’s clean versus when it’s not clean. The thing is, buried beneath the clothing you wear on a consistent basis could potentially be a piece that you have long-forgotten about. Taking the time to clean it out might help you get the absolute most use out of everything you own.
It’s also a good idea to give your closet a good cleaning every now and then so you can donate the items that you know you’ll never be wearing. A decluttered closet is much easier to work with, and if you’re not getting use out of something, you might as well give it to someone who will.
Ultimately, you don’t want forget about the clothes you don’t use. Speaking of not forgetting things…

DON’T FORGET ABOUT NICER PIECES.
We all have at least one piece in our closet that we convince ourselves can only be worn during nicer occasions. For me, that piece was actually the pair of wedges I’m wearing in these photos. For a long time, I felt like these wedges would only look good with sophisticated dresses and jewelry. And consequently, I only ended up wearing on them on the handful of occasions when I worn outfits that fell into that category.
However, I not-so-recently decided to branch out and start wearing them more often, a decision that really worked in my favor. It turns out I love the way the wedges look with a pair of blue jeans. Now I’m getting a ton of use out of them, despite the fact that I’m not attending more dressy events than usual.
The main point I’m trying to get across here is that you shouldn’t limit your clothing to specific settings or occasions. Allow yourself to experiment with the different pieces in your wardrobe, and even test them out in situations you may not have necessarily purchased them for. When it comes down to it, style is all about trial and error. It’s better to have tried something out to see if it works than to not try it at all.
STICK WITH THE BASICS.
Basics are LIFESAVERS.
Not only are they inexpensive and comfortable, basics are also so easy to style. A simple tank top can be worn with a skirt, under a cardigan, or paired with a cute pair of jeans. Basics can do just about anything.
Look through all the basic pieces in your wardrobe and see if you’ve taken full advantage of them. Is there another way you could be styling that pretty blue v-neck that you’ve had for ages? It’s important not to allow those basics to go waste. One of my favorite ways to do that is with layering. You throw a colored camisole over a white t-shirt, and you’ve got a cute look. Simple as that.
Anyway, those are just some things I do to get as much as I can out of my wardrobe! I hope these tips can be useful to you, and I would love to hear about any ideas that you have.

I absolutely adore that top on you! I need to have a major wardrobe clear out, there’s just no point in keeping stuff you never wear and forgetting about those clothes that can actually come in really handy sometimes

These are some great tips, Paige. I’m guilty of rarely cleaning out my wardrobe and then spending ages complaining that I have absolutely nothing to wear! When I finally do get around to sorting out my clothes,I almost always find a piece that I love loitering at the back that I’d somehow forgotten about!! I also like your tip about experimenting with your nicer clothes – I’m definitely going to try that one!

Totally agree that fashion is so much more about styling the items you have than buying new ones each season. When I do add pieces though, I find it so hard to clear out my wardrobe because I’m always like what if I NEED it in the future for something haha. Also, I’m definitely guilty of saving pieces for an occasion, but, honestly, I’m probably the only one noticing if I wore the same top to two parties!

Right now I’m not financially able to buy a new fall wardrobe pieces, but since I sew and have fabric I will try to sew up some basics that can be mixed and match.
