Now that Blogmas is officially underway, I thought it would be a good idea to share some tips on how to successfully get through it. Regardless of what your regular posting schedule looks like, I think we can all agree that Blogmas is a huge step up. Posting on a daily basis can definitely be demanding, and since this will be my third time participating in Blogmas, I (kind of) have an idea of what it’s like. With that being said, these are some of the things I would recommend doing in order to make it through without missing a post.
#1: Make the decision early
One of the most important things I’ve learned about successfully getting through Blogmas is that it’s better to make the decision to participate earlier than later. My first year blogging, I decided in early November I was going to do Blogmas, which gave me a decent amount of time to start planning posts and organizing content. My second year blogging, however, I didn’t make the decision until a few days before December began. Not only did this give me a lot of work all at once, it also prevented me from writing backup posts or taking photos in advance in the event that things went wrong later on.
I learned from that mistake this year and ended up making the choice to participate in Blogmas around early to mid July. Obviously you don’t have to actually start writing posts that early, but it gave me plenty of time to brainstorm ideas, so I didn’t feel like I was in a rush to do a million things at once.
If you’re going to do Blogmas, commit to it early. You can never give yourself too much time, but you can certainly give yourself too little.
#2: Come up with your post ideas ahead of time
Going along with tip #1, I strongly recommend coming up with all of your Blogmas post ideas in advance. Having your ideas formulated and ready to be written will simplify things tremendously. Instead of having to brainstorm and write each day, all you will have to do is write. It might not sound like that big of a deal, but I promise it is.
What I would suggest doing is creating a running list of Blogmas post ideas. Keep it somewhere you have easy access to it, so you will be able to use it for inspiration whenever you go to blog.
#3: Write everything out in a calendar
If you are a super planner-oriented person like me, this step is a necessity. After you have your list of blog post ideas mentioned in tip #2, pull out your calendar and assign each idea to a specific date. Having the ability to see that everything has a clear, specific date can make things easier. Plus, you can keep track of what you have done by checking off posts as you write and photograph them.
#4: Have backup posts/photos prepared
If you’re not really into the idea of planning out all your posts in advance, I would recommend at least preparing a few back up posts. One thing I have learned from previous Blogmases, as well as daily blogging in general, is that things will go wrong if you are not prepared. For example, you may plan on shooting photos for a post on the day you intend to post it, but changes in weather, sickness, and personal obligations could easily get in the way of that.
It’s good to be prepared, which is why I suggest you write two or three posts at the beginning of the month that you hold onto as backups. This way, you will still have content to put up even if things don’t go according to plan.
#5: Be realistic with your expectations
Finally, I think it’s important to be realistic with yourself and what you expect. It is blogging after all, and the world is not going to end if you are unable to follow through with Blogmas. While it can be a fun way to challenge yourself, don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you no longer enjoy it.

I definitely agree with these tips and did number 2 before I did number 1 – I didn’t want to commit unless I had enough ideas.. A couple of extra things have come up and I scrapped some other ideas that I liked less, but it’s always good to have too many ideas than not enough. if you don’t use everything, you can use some of the less Christmassy stuff as Winter posts in Jan or Feb. Thanks for sharing these tips.
