One of my best decisions this year thus far has been to start morning journaling.
Morning journaling is essentially this idea that you take a few minutes out of your morning and devote them to journaling. Usually, you want to do this before you do anything else. Wake up. Morning journal.
The rules that I have established for my morning journalling routine are pretty simple.
Rule #1: It’s ten minutes and only ten minutes.
Rule #2: Once you start writing, you DO NOT STOP until the ten minutes are up.
I keep these journaling sessions ten minutes long because I don’t want them to interfere with the rest of my plans for the day. The writing that gets produced during these periods ultimately isn’t going to be used for anything. It’s messy and jumbled, and it flows like a stream of thoughts rather than an organized piece of work. It honestly would probably be counterproductive if I afforded myself anything more than ten minutes.
HOWEVER, what I have discovered is that this process has given me such a massive boost in terms of both productivity and creativity. Today I want to talk about the benefits of morning journaling and why I think YOU (yes, you) should be doing it, too.
To begin, I should probably explain what these morning journalling sessions are aimed at. For me personally, the goal in starting them was to find a way to bolster my creativity in the morning. While I generally prefer getting things done in the morning rather than in the evening, I have noticed that right after I wake up it takes me a little while to get warmed up before I really start hitting my stride.
What I have discovered from morning journalling is that by getting my jumbled, disorganized thoughts down on paper before I dive into my day’s work, I am able to go into my first task of the day with a clearer state of mind.
I have always felt like mornings are chaotic when you have a busy schedule. When you’ve got a lot of things to get done in one day, it’s hard to figure out where to even begin. Therefore, by getting that chaos out of your head and out on the pages of notebook, you can enter your first task of the day with a more organized headspace.
Another reason I think morning journaling is so great is that it helps bolster your creativity. Morning journaling allows you to get whatever creative ideas are flowing through your brain out in the open with no regard to organization, structure or clarity. You don’t have to worry about being coherent or ramble-y because the writing is for YOU and only YOU.
You can talk about whatever you want in your morning journal. A creative idea you have. A problem that’s been bothering you. You can even write out your to-do list. The morning journal is designed to tailor to your specific needs (even if those needs change on a day-to-day basis).
Overall, the morning journal can serve any purpose you’d like. It is a simple and effective way to sort out jumbled thoughts and foster your creativity. I feel that I have been consistently more productive since starting with my morning journal. It’s amazing how such a simple change can have dramatic, long-lasting effects.
I strongly encourage you to give it a try of your own. Even if you just do it for five minutes, I think you will be happy with the difference it makes in your mornings.
