There are lot of ideas out there about what fashion blogging is and isn’t. Today I thought it would be interesting to discuss some of the most common misconceptions that I’ve seen about fashion blogging, as well as what the reality actually is.
“All fashion bloggers have professional photographers taking their photos.”
Contrary to popular belief, not all fashion bloggers have professional photographers taking their photos. I take all of my photos myself (with the assistance of a tripod, of course). And I know that a lot of other fashion bloggers have friends and family members take photos for them. You can have a professional do your photos for you, but you don’t have to.
“Fashion blogging isn’t as much work as other forms of blogging.”
Not true. At all. It’s a common misconception that fashion blogging is as easy as snapping a few quick outfit photos and posting them on Instagram, but let me tell you that is so not the case.
Taking outfit photos is a lengthy battle in and of itself. As I showed in my blog outtakes post last summer, most of the photos you take as a fashion blogger turn out horrible. In fact, if I had to give you a ratio of good-to-bad, I would say it’s about 30:70. During photo sessions, things are constantly going wrong. The shots you see fashion bloggers post on Instagram that look super polished and natural are only the best of the best. What you aren’t seeing are the flyaway hairs, the awkward poses, and the weird lighting situations that all occurred in the shots that didn’t get posted.
On top of that, you also have to account for the time it takes to write blog posts, promote content, and, you know, actually come up with outfit ideas. Is it the absolute hardest thing in the world? No. But by no means is it the easiest.
“All fashion bloggers have an endless supply of clothing.”
Another thing people tend to assume about fashion blogging is that all fashion bloggers have these massive, ever-growing wardrobes. I know I can’t speak for every single fashion blogger on the planet, but this isn’t the case for most of us. I do not go out and buy an entirely new outfit every time I shoot a blog post. In fact, I actually repurpose a lot of my favorite pieces and feature them in multiple posts.
Fashion blogging isn’t about having the most clothes. It’s about showcasing your personal style. You don’t have to have a bottomless clothing budget to become a fashion blogger; you can blog about clothing with however much of it you have.
“All fashion bloggers are super comfortable in front of the camera.”
I think one of the things that is most off putting to people who are interested in potentially fashion blogging is that they feel like they will never be comfortable taking and/or having photos taken of themselves. I know when I first started blogging I wasn’t too sure about doing fashion content because I felt like I wasn’t a natural in front of the camera.
Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you that being a fashion blogger does not necessarily mean you feel at ease while having your picture taken. It gets easier with time, sure. But it still feels sort of awkward and strange.
Anyway, those are a few misconceptions that people have about fashion blogging! I hope you enjoyed reading, and as always thank you for check this out!

These are so true though. People think it’s very easy to go out and search for 100 locations to take pictures

I’m not a fashion blogger by any stretch but I think there is misconception regarding fashion blogging is – “It’s not cerebral/highbrow enough”. But there are folks like Gala Darling who has turned into a mini empire. And running a business definitely needs intelligence.

I thought you were always buying clothes for each blog post.

Definitely not haha! Everything I wear comes from my closet and ends up getting reused many times!

I always think your fashion shots ar cute! I’d like to do more fashion related stuff but it’s not always easy to get to exotic locations and have someone follow you round taking candid shots. I’m usually in my garden like you!

Thank you! I know exactly what you mean about locations. I don’t know how some people manage to find so many different spots! The definitely garden works well though!

Seriously could not agree more with these points. I am a newbie fashion blogger, and people ask what else I do with the rest of my time. ha.

I love this! It’s already hard enough to decide what to wear, but I love that you point out that to be a fashion blogger there is no need to be constantly buying new pieces!

I feel so much better now that you mentioned about how wrong most of the time shoots are. I though it was only me. Now I realize that the difficulty of getting the right shot is what makes it a memorable one. There is nothing better than looking at a picture and understanding the hard work that made it. Thanks for that gurl ❤
