2018: The Year to Stop Living for Other People

I made blog resolutions for the new year a couple weeks ago, and I thought that was going to be it for me in terms of year-long goals. But then, I started to do some reflecting, and I came to the realization that I wasn’t quite done yet. That I still wanted to create a central theme for this year.

So, I came up with a motto for 2018. And I think it’s a pretty good one.

I’m calling it 2018: The Year to Stop Living for Other People.

Why?

Because I think it’s incredibly easy to get caught up in other people’s expectations and inadvertently forget what you really want.

Because a lot of the time what you want isn’t necessarily what other people want for you. And in spite of the fact that they may disagree with your choices, they’re ultimately yours to make.

Because your life shouldn’t be built around the wants of other people. And wanting to make your own decisions despite the disapproval of others isn’t selfish.

Because when it comes down to it, everyone is going to have an opinion on what you do. But the thing is, the only opinion that matters is yours.

Sometimes, I feel like it’s difficult to remember that your goals, wants, and ambitions don’t always have to align with the ones that other people expect from you. That sometimes your gut is going to tell you something completely different than anyone else. And that it’s perfectly okay.

It’s important to keep in mind that the only person who needs to approve of all of your decisions is you. You do not require the validation of other people in order to make things happen. Your goals and the ways in which you pursue them are entirely up to you. Other people might not care for what you decide, but ultimately you’re the only person who is going to have to live with your decisions. So, it really doesn’t matter what they think.

That being said, I’m going to try and make 2018 a year for living according to my own goals and standards. If I believe that a certain decision is best for me, then I’m going to make that decision.

I’m not going to worry about pleasing other people or living up to their expectations. The things that I do and the experiences that I go through will be ones that I select on my own. That’s my goal for 2018.

Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoy the rest of your Sunday. 🙂

Do you have a motto or theme for 2018?

  1. That’s so exciting! I did something similar in 2017 – ending relationships that were toxic instead of being worried about hurting their feelings. This year I’m trying to keep it going by not letting what people say at work or other places (mostly Work) get to me. One year I’ll be able to switch gears and start living for me 😂

  2. This year’s motto is slightly similar to mine from last year which was “Throw me to the wolves and I’ll come back leading the pack.” 2017 lived up to it in full with me getting out of a job I was starting to hate. This year’s is a quote I wanted to post for New Year’s but didn’t get to finish fixing my letter board to do it. “She designed a life that she loved.” That’s the motto for this year. I want to fall back in love with life and be unapologetically me. And if no one likes it, well they’re just out of luck!

      1. I’m already myself… I just had a bad habit of saying ‘I’m Sorry’ when I’m really not. So that’s one of my major person goals this year to just stop that. I’m not sorry about 95% of what I say.

  3. Yeah this is so true. We all need to understand that to love yourself is not selfishness. It may be called self interest. And by the way this is the first time I visited any of your blogs and it was worth reading😊
