Can I just be blunt for a second and say that posing for blog photos can be super awkward?
If you’re not someone who spends a lot of time in front of a camera, I feel like it’s the hardest aspect of blogging to get used to.
Take me, for example. I’ve been blogging for little over a year now (wow that feels like a long time!), and I still have a hard time feeling at ease when it comes to taking blog photos. My comfort level has definitely increased in that time frame, but it’s not like I can whip out my tripod and take dozens of great photos without a share of awful ones as well.
That being said, I think one of the most difficult and uncomfortable things about taking blog photos is not knowing what to do in them. You may have an idea of how you want your photos to look before you start taking them, but getting that idea to translate in real life is pretty much next to impossible (especially if you’re a perfectionist like me, whose eye for detail becomes unbearably picky during the photo-taking process. If I’m looking at my photos after a shoot and notice my arm is tilted at a slightly awkward angle, chances are I’ll end up reshooting the whole thing.)
However, one thing I have noticed that has really helped me take better photos has been developing a standard or go-to “pose.” I didn’t do it intentionally, but I recently realized that I stick with a slight variation of the same pose in my blog photos. Every. Single. One.
Don’t believe me? Here’s some photographic evidence for you.
Wait for it.
Same pose.
Same pose. Again.
This one again? I’m so shocked.
Same pose. Oh, I think you get the point.
I like to call this my clutching-my-sunglasses-for-no-apparent-reason pose.
Of course, I suppose another appropriate name for it would be my only pose because it seems to be the only thing I know how to do during a photo session.
Jokes aside, I must admit that doing this little pose has taken away some of the awkwardness in blog photos and ultimately made the process a whole lot easier for me. It gives me something to do with my hands (other than awkwardly keep them at my sides). Plus, I get the chance to share some of my favorite pairs of sunnies.
Not sure how it’ll work when it’s negative ten degrees outside and the sun is nowhere in sight, though I guess I’ll cross that bridge later…
Anyways, this realization made me very curious about how other bloggers handle the awkwardness that comes with being in front of the camera. I have a feeling I’m not the only one to develop a go-to pose, and I’d really love to hear about yours!
Do you have a go-to blog photo pose?
Sincerely,
A little bit of smile in the first two pics…enhanced the pics with an added connection!

Using a tripod definitely helps remove some of the awkwardness because someone isn’t taking your picture! Haha.

Easy tips (and no awkward hand needed!):
(1) Pretend to walk and look in different directions
(2) Be seated and relax 🙂
You don’t always need to look into the camera, that way you can be more relaxed and just let yourself go! I like all your outfits tho 🙂

That’s crazy you strike essentially the same pose every time for pictures-yet with the varied outfits and backgrounds, there’s still a good variety in the pictures. (:

Omg I just tweeted about this the other day! I feel so awkward taking photos! I feel like my signature pose is with a coffee looking less than approachable (talk about RBF) or messing with my hair. There is no inbetween cute pose yet haha Trying to get more and more comfortable as I keep going!
Thanks for this!

It can be awkward doing photos. I find I get over the awkwardness by having fun and doing whatever random thing comes to mind.

Great post! I’m so pleased I’m not the only one! It doesn’t help that my husband feels super awkward about taking them when we’re out and about either!
