The other day I was doing some thinking about life changes, and I came to a few realizations that I really wanted to incorporate into a blog post. My hope is that some of you may have gone through similar thoughts and experiences and can relate to them.
In life, we’re often told that the only constant is change. We’re always being pulled in different directions and tossed into new situations. Some of these changes are more obvious than others. They’re usually signified by a party or a graduation or a promotion. They’re the changes that we spend most of our lives striving towards and the ones that society has deemed the most significant.
But I’m starting to think these obvious changes aren’t the most important ones that we go through in life. I’m beginning to wonder whether or not the greatest things we experience are really marked by ceremonies and events. To me, some of the biggest changes that we go through as people occur without much attention or grandeur. They unfold in a way that is both unconscious and natural. And we don’t even notice them until we look back and realize that we haven’t always been living with them.
I don’t think every pivotal change has a clear beginning and ending. I think that sometimes the most important changes happen to us without us even noticing. When I consider many of the critical changes that have shaped my life, I don’t reminisce over specific, well-documented events. I don’t think about things that happen at a set time or place. Instead, I focus on the changes that have affected me on a personal level. The ones that have shaped my hobbies and interests and ultimately made me who I am.
Significant changes shouldn’t be set moments that happen at the same time to everybody. They should be moments that mean a great deal to us as individuals rather than as a collective group. Change occurs all around us on a daily basis. Some changes are more important to one person than they are to another. But the best kind of change is the kind that happens without letting you realize that it happened. It alters you in massive way without calling attention to itself, and then you suddenly can’t remember life before it.
What have been some of the most significant changes in your life?
