Running a blog has definitely been an incredible experience, but that doesn’t mean it comes without challenge. Making the time to write posts, take and edit photos, and update social media can be a lot, especially when you have other responsibilities. Today I thought I would talk about how I manage blogging in addition to a busy schedule.
A couple of days ago, I wrote a post about five of the biggest blogging misconceptions. One of the piece’s main points was that blogging is much more difficult than many people presume. Several bloggers agreed with me in the comments, particularly about the challenges of social media. This seemed like a fitting follow-up to that post, as I have started to develop a better blogging schedule these past few weeks. Blogging can be pretty overwhelming and these little tips have helped me tremendously.
1. Managing your time
When I started my blog, one thing that I underestimated was the amount of time I would need to put into it. I assumed that blogging would be as simple as writing something and posting it. I didn’t take into consideration things like social media or photography. Now that I’m conscious of all the little details that go into blogging, I make sure to budget my time to get them all done. This means devoting any free time (no matter how short) to my blog. For example, if I have a couple of minutes before I have to be somewhere, I’ll use it to tweet about a blog post or save some articles to my Pinterest.
I have this little rule with myself where I do something blog-related every time that blogging comes to mind. So if I’m sitting on my couch and suddenly think about my blog, I tell myself to go respond to comments or brainstorm post ideas. It helps me get blog work done throughout the day, even if I have lots of other obligations to worry about.
2. Planning ahead
Being aware of busy work or school weeks ahead of time can make them much less stressful when they actually arrive. I like to plan ahead using my schedule. If it turns out that I have a lot going on, I write posts in advance. This makes it easy to stay active even when I’m busy. Scheduling apps like Buffer are great if you are in a bind. I don’t schedule tweets often, but when I’m swamped with work, it’s a lifesaver.
3. Taking lots of photos
Whenever I have time, I try to take lots of blog pictures. I find that photography is the easiest aspect of blogging to fall behind in. Since I’m very particular about the lighting in my photos, there are only certain days when I can take them. As a result, I take as many as possible. This makes it easier for me to put together blog posts, especially when I have other things to do.
