Five Ways to Lower Your Stress

It’s an unfortunate truth, but stress is an inescapable part of life. We are constantly confronted by intense situations, always battling one worry after another. It’s so easy to get caught up our problems and crumble under pressure.

During stressful times, these are some things I do to keep myself calm. Hopefully they can help you as well.

Remind yourself you’re human. We all have the desire to work hard and find success, but sometimes we push ourselves too much. It’s important to know your constraints and limitations. Even though we may tell ourselves otherwise, we cannot work twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. We’re human beings and that means we need a reprieve every now and then. Don’t chastise yourself for wanting to relax.

Remember to breathe. Amidst the chaos of life, this is something I often find myself forgetting. It’s so easy to busy yourself with work or school and inadvertently watch time pass you by. Try to enjoy as much of it as you can. Life is fleeting, so it’s important to pay attention to the small joys we encounter each and every day.

Make a list of your stresses. This is an activity that really helps me deal with a lot of projects at once. If I’m feeling stressed, I like to compose a list of all things I need to get done, and then I check them off as I accomplish them. Difficulties often seem less impossible when they’re written on paper.

Ignore what’s out of your control. I think we all have been guilty of this at least once in our lives. We get ourselves worked up over things that we have absolutely no influence over. Next time that happens, channel your stress into something you do have control over. Don’t waste your energy on something you have no affect on.

Get a good night of sleep. Stress is often a side-effect of tiredness. Exhaustion makes it difficult to conquer your goals. Try getting some rest and then dealing with your problems with renewed energy and a clear mind.
