Hello all,
While we sing about it being “the most wonderful time of the year,” the holiday season can sometimes be anything but that. Don’t get me wrong; I love the festivities as much as anyone. Why else would I be participating in Blogmas? But in spite of my deep adoration for the holidays, there are mild annoyances about this time of year that drive me past the brink of insanity. (So much for being mild).
Anyways, here are a few aspects of “the most wonderful time of the year” that I find not so wonderful. Hopefully you can relate.
Get ready for the gifs.
- Wrapping Presents
Does anyone actually know how to do this properly? Ever since I stated wrapping presents, I’ve found it to be incredibly frustrating. Nothing I wrap ever turns out well. Wrapping gifts must be a science that takes years of practice to fully master. Personally, I’d rather stick to bags.
- Hearing Christmas Music
In my experience, Christmas music has a really polarizing affect on people. Some love it. Some hate it. But there doesn’t seem to be much of a between. While I don’t mind the idea of Christmas music, I can’t stand being bombarded by it everywhere I go. And I mean everywhere.
Turning on your radio.
“Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la”
Going to the mall.
“Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la”
Eating at a restaurant.
“Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la”
It’s a vicious, never ending cycle of songs you’ve heard millions of times. People say that too much of anything is bad and I definitely would have to agree. Christmas music gets majorly overplayed.
- Shopping In Crowded Stores
During the holiday season, stores are always clustered with people. This makes it incredibly frustrating to shop. Any time you try to look at something, there’s always someone right beside you. And the parking lots? Don’t even get me started.
4. Taking Exams
If you’re no longer in school, consider yourself lucky that this annoyance no longer applies to you. For students, the holiday season means stress, stress, and more stress. Not only do you have holiday responsibilities to fulfill (i.e. buying gifts, prepping for parties), you also have exams. These lengthy tests turn the “most wonderful time of the year” into the “most stressful time of the year.” How can you be expected to enjoy the holidays if you’re worrying about your grades?
5. Attending Awkward Parties
I think we all have at least that one awkward holiday party that we spend the entire month of December dreading. Maybe it’s because we don’t know any of the people there. Maybe it’s because we know the people there too well. Either way, we spend the duration of the night awkwardly scrolling through social media. Needless to say, this is not a fun holiday experience.
In spite of all the negatives I’ve needlessly pointed out, the holidays are a great time of the year. Make sure to enjoy them, because dwelling on the parts you don’t like won’t make them go away.
Thank you so much for reading. What are your least favorite things about the holidays? Let me know in the comments.
Be sure to check out my next Blogmas post. I’ll be blogging every day up until the 25th.
Sincerely yours,
Paige

i can relate to all of the above – i love christmas as much as the next girl but present shopping, buying, wrapping has to be the worst bit about it! although, giving out the presents does make it a bit more worth it!

It is great to see someone else participating in blogmas! I loved this post. I can relate to all of your points though I don’t find Christmas music to be quite as irritating as you. I like to hear it when I want and which songs I want. I have not been in school for decades but I do remember the stress of exam time in the middle of getting ready for the holidays. I went to university about 1,300 miles from where my family lived so I had to add some travel in there as well. Anyways, great piece and btw I love your blog name and tag line! 🙂

The exam part is so true. Of all days, why choose the season of the most wonderful time of the year?
