With the holiday season creeping quickly upon us, many of us have wanted to embrace the seasonal festivities. I don’t think there’s a better way to showcase love for the holidays than through makeup. Bright, bold lips are the perfect way to make any look more festive. A dash of red or burgundy or plum lipstick can change the total dynamic of an outfit, especially if it’s complemented well. These are some of the tips I like to try in order to make colorful lips more effective.
The first thing that I always make sure to do before I apply a vibrant lipstick is to moisturize my lips. Lipstick formula is typically very dry, so it’s important to apply a long-lasting balm beforehand. I personally love anything Burt’s Bees because their products are incredibly rich, but they don’t cost you an arm and a leg. Just be sure to pick a moisturizer you’ve had success with in the past.
Another easy trick to attaining a brighter lip color is to apply concealer first. For some people (myself included), this is a strange concept. However, I swear by it. Applying concealer to your lips helps color last longer and improves pigmentation.
A technique that has really helped my lipstick last is setting it with translucent powder. We all know one of the most irritating things about bright lipsticks is when they smudge. This process keeps smears from happening. After I apply my lipstick, I take a thin tissue, lay it over my lips, and gently apply translucent powder with a brush.
One simple way to make a bold lip really pop is keep the focus of your makeup on the lip color. If you’re going with a bright lipstick, then your lips should be the feature you want to draw the most attention to. You shouldn’t stress over creating an intricate eyeshadow look because it will only draw eyes away from the lips. Keep it simple with neutral base and a flick of eyeliner.
