Subtle Smoky Eye

If it isn’t obvious from my recent string of posts, I’ve been in a makeup sort of mindset lately. I love testing out different looks and creating some of my own. One of my favorite products to experiment with is eyeshadow because of its versatility. You can go bold and dramatic or small and simple. You can go wild and vibrant or earthy and neutral. You can go metallic and shimmery or simple and matte. The options are virtually endless.

Since eyeshadow is so adaptable, it’s easy to pair it with any outfit you may be wearing. On a typical day, I enjoy sporting a look that is both pretty and effortless. While the smoky eye is usually considered a nighttime look, I like to water it down and wear it during the day. Here’s how I create my subtle smoky eye:

Recycled photo because why not

This is a self-explanatory step that I probably don’t need to include. Primer prolongs the wear of your shadow by keeping your eyelids oil-free. I normally use Urban Decay’s primer potion. It works wonders and has a gorgeous translucent shimmer.

The next step I take is to apply a light base color to my eyelids. Using a small E.L.F brush and the shade “Skimp” from Urban Decay’s Naked 2 Basics (a lot of Urban Decay, I know), I coat my lids in a nice, even layer and then dust whatever remains on the brush across my  browbone to add a little bit of highlight.

Now, using another blending brush, I take “Primal” from Urban Decay’s Naked Basics 2 and blend it into the corner of my eye. This gives my eyes dimension and provides a subtle contrast between the two shadows. I continue blending until I am happy with the results.

Eyeliner and Mascara:

Excuse my terrible eyeliner. It doesn’t always look this bad, I swear.

To finish off this look, I add a thin line of liquid eyeliner and several coats of mascara. If you read about my adoration for Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner , then you probably expected it to be the one I used. In addition, I applied a couple of layers of Bare Mineral’s Lash Domination mascara. I’ve really been loving that product lately. If you’d be interested in reading a full-review of it, feel free to let me know.

Afterthought: I hit two hundred followers last night. Thank you all so much for checking out this blog.

Until next time.

Sincerely yours,

  1. I’ve been looking through your blog and I enjoy your writing style. It’s a fun writing style and I feel like you’re speaking to a friend. I like that a lot. I definitely agree with you, Urban Decay’s Primer Potion is absolutely magical. I’ve never used a better primer for my eyelids. The Naked Basics Palette is also one of my favorites because you can create looks that are simple yet sexy plus, I don’t particularly like spending a lifetime on my makeup haha! I’ll definitely be a new follower. Also, thanks for liking my post!
