Schoolbag Essentials 2016

Hello!

Before I begin, I would like to preface that writing this is excruciatingly painful. As you probably noticed from the title, this entry is school-centric (I know, I know. Internally, I am shuttering). I have an unusually strong aversion to back to school content on the Internet. It makes me cringe. My hatred has nothing to do with the material itself; it stems from the fact that back to school is another phrase for the end of summer. I realize that is a ridiculous thing to despise. Avoiding this content won’t prolong summer, nor will it help me be prepared for the upcoming year. I need to get rid of this unnecessary habit.

Today I am forcing myself to write a back to school post. If you are like me, and these entries make you want to gouge your eyes out with a fork (thanks for that mental image, Paige), then maybe you can convince yourself to read this for the same reason. We are in this together! (That last sentence was meant to be melodramatic by the way…sarcasm does not always translate through writing). Anyway, I have elected to share a few of my schoolbag essentials. Keep in mind that these are suggestions based solely on my personal taste. You may not agree with/need all of them. Additionally, these items are NOT school supplies (i.e. pens, notebooks, folders); they are things that I like to have with me, but do not actually need.

First and foremost is a schoolbag. For the majority of my school career, I have carried around a backpack. I have found them to be convenient in terms of size, as well as easily accessible. But this year I chose something different (gasp!): a tote bag. The bag I selected is from the company Stella & Dot. Unfortunately, I picked it up at a resale shop, and it is no longer available online. If I remember, I’ll link their website in case you want to peruse their other purses. However, if you are looking for a cheaper alternative (like I did), I would recommend searching your local resale store. You will be surprised by what you find. My bag is large, black-and-white striped, and in excellent condition. You would not believe that it had ever been used.

When buying a bag, make sure it has enough space for your books, binders, etc. Although something may look fashionable, it may not be functional. I suggest selecting something with lots of little pockets. These can hold your phone, gum, money, lipstick, pens or anything other small items you may need.

For me, the most important object to keep in my school purse is a makeup bag. The one I use is from Clinique. It is very petite, so I never have to worry about it taking up too much space. In this bag, I store three travel-size essentials: lotion, hand sanitizer, and chapstick. Regardless of the season, these items are ALWAYS in my schoolbag. I find myself reaching for them constantly; they are my must-haves. I advise using a Burt’s Bees chapstick, an EOS lotion, and a Bath & Body Works hand sanitizer. Be warned: the scents should be light and neutral. If they are incredibly strong, you will grow sick of them. Trust me. I can no longer smell mango lotion without feeling nauseous.

In addition, I may add a few products throughout the course of the year. Travel-size mascara is nice if you wear makeup to school. Perfume is useful as well. This is really up to you and your preferences. I keep an extra pair of earbuds in my schoolbag too. They are good to have in case a teacher allows you to listen to music while you work. Next to my earbuds, I always have a pack of mints. I do not like gum, so I frequently chew on them during the day.

Here’s a list of the products I mentioned above, as well as a few extras:

  • Burt’s Bees “Hibiscus” Tinted Lip Balm
  • EOS lotion
  • Bath & Body Works hand sanitizer in “Pumpkin Caramel Latte”
  • Blotting paper
  • Earbuds
  • Portable phone charger (I don’t know the brand of mine…see photo)
  • Sunglasses (warmer months/depends on geographical location)
  • Mint Tic Tacs
  • Blue and white pencil pouch (Forever 21)
  • Marcelle Xtension Plus Curl mascara
  • Clinique Floral Cosmetic Bag Set
  • Mini hairbrush
  • Bandages
  • Hair ties

Hopefully I covered everything. Thank you for reading. Make sure to check out my Instagram and Pinterest if you have not!
